Amy Cormode
I am passionate about helping children and families understand themselves and each other more deeply… from the inside out. I want to help you and your child discover that in fact there is nothing wrong with you or them.
I will come alongside you and your child to nurture the essence of each individual.
In my work, I plant myself firmly on a couple of deep truths: There is enough - enough time, enough resource, enough possibility existing in each moment - and we can learn and practice how to access what we need.
There is nothing wrong with you. Full stop.
We often receive messages from people around us or society at large telling us that there is something wrong with us. I love to support children who want to get on with being themselves and maybe don't fit typical categories or ways of being. In our sessions, we will collaborate to identify and clear obstacles blocking your child's healthy development, so that both you and your child feel happier in the world and capable of handling the stresses you face in life.
I’m particularly adept at working with neurodivergent or what I like to call neurospicy individuals. I also enjoy working with families from different cultures. I believe awareness of the mind-body connection is essential to healing and growth.
I look at each child as a unique expression of their physiology, emotions, feelings, thoughts, and experiences.
My trainings include a lifetime of lived experience as a neurodivergent individual raising three neurodivergent children as well as foundational trainings in Oaklander Gestalt Play Therapy and Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART), which serve as the framework for all of my work.
In our first few sessions, we work together to get curious and notice what the child’s senses are telling them and how they can identify what they need. Over time, I’ve learned that perhaps the most important factor in a child’s ability to function well is their relationship with their primary caregivers. For this reason, I spend a lot of time supporting parents and caregivers so they are able to own their own feelings, affirm their child’s feelings, and learn how to set limits and maintain connection with their child.
If you feel like you are at the end of your rope because your child is having meltdowns, every day feels like a struggle, and you’re tired of fighting, I’m here to offer you a space to grow and to help you learn how to have fun together again. I know from a lifetime of working with children and families, and from experience as a mother myself, that the ways that we think about and talk to our children matter, and it is never too late to repair or make changes in our relationship. Once we start to work together, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover that therapy is more fun than you think and may benefit other parts of your life.
